Great Barrier Reef bleaching

Queensland, Australia · -16.90°, 146.10° · Coral bleaching

Marine heatwaves have bleached the reef repeatedly since 2016, killing coral across vast stretches.

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on Earth. When water gets too warm, corals expel the algae that feed and colour them, turning white; prolonged bleaching kills them. Mass bleaching struck in 2016, 2017, 2020, 2022 and 2024. Cutting emissions is the only long-term fix; water-quality improvements and coral restoration help locally.
