Ok Tedi mine

Western Province, Papua New Guinea · -5.20°, 141.15° · Mining damage

A copper mine dumped tailings straight into the river system, smothering forest along hundreds of kilometres.

After a tailings dam collapsed during construction, the Ok Tedi copper and gold mine discharged tens of thousands of tonnes of waste rock and tailings into the Ok Tedi and Fly rivers daily for decades. The riverbed rose, flooding and killing forest over a vast area and devastating fisheries for downstream communities. It remains one of the largest mining disasters on record.
