Rio Doce tailings disaster

Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil · -20.24°, -43.45° · Mining damage

A collapsed iron-ore tailings dam sent a wave of mud 650 km down the Rio Doce to the Atlantic in 2015.

The Fundão dam at the Samarco mine failed in November 2015, burying the village of Bento Rodrigues, killing 19 people and releasing tens of millions of cubic metres of tailings. The mud travelled the length of the Rio Doce, killing fish and cutting off water supplies to towns before reaching the ocean. Brazil's worst environmental disaster was followed in 2019 by the Brumadinho dam collapse, which killed 270.
