Beijing–Hebei air basin
Beijing, China · 39.90°, 116.40° · Air pollution
Once infamous for 'airpocalypse' smog from coal; a decade of controls has cut particulates sharply.
In 2013 Beijing's PM2.5 peaked at levels dozens of times above WHO guidance, mostly from coal heating, heavy industry in surrounding Hebei province and traffic. An aggressive clean-air action plan replaced coal boilers with gas, shut or relocated steel plants and tightened vehicle standards, roughly halving particulate levels by the early 2020s.
