Crop-stubble burning, traffic and winter inversions push particulate levels far past safe limits.

Each November, smoke from rice-stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana drifts over Delhi and combines with vehicle exhaust, construction dust and fireworks. Cold, still air traps it near the ground, and PM2.5 readings routinely exceed WHO guidelines many times over. Measures include odd-even driving days, bans on burning and a push for cleaner fuels.
