Rice-straw burning, traffic and desert dust produce an autumn 'black cloud' over the Nile Delta.

Greater Cairo is home to more than 20 million people. Every autumn since the late 1990s, farmers burning rice straw in the Delta have combined with vehicle and industrial emissions to form a thick dark haze. Programmes to collect and recycle straw, convert vehicles to natural gas and expand the metro aim to clear it.
