Ulaanbaatar ger-district smoke
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia · 47.92°, 106.90° · Air pollution
Raw coal burned to heat tens of thousands of gers makes winter air among the worst anywhere.
Ulaanbaatar is the coldest capital city on Earth, and more than half its residents live in ger (yurt) districts without central heating. Burning raw coal in household stoves through -30°C winters produced PM2.5 levels far beyond safe limits. A 2019 ban on raw coal in favour of refined briquettes reduced pollution but brought carbon-monoxide poisonings.
