Bełchatów power station
Łódź Voivodeship, Poland · 51.27°, 19.33° · Fossil fuels
Europe's largest coal power plant and the EU's single biggest CO2 emitter, fed by a lignite pit over 300 m deep.
Bełchatów burns brown coal dug from an adjacent open-pit mine, one of the largest holes in Europe, to supply around a fifth of Poland's electricity. It has topped the list of the EU's highest-emitting installations for years. Poland has pledged to phase out coal and the plant is scheduled to close by 2036, with the region negotiating a 'just transition' for its workers.
