Jharia coalfield fires
Jharkhand, India ยท 23.74ยฐ, 86.41ยฐ ยท Fossil fuels
Underground coal seams have burned for over a century beneath a town of hundreds of thousands.
Jharia holds India's richest coking-coal reserves. Fires in abandoned and open-cast mines have burned since at least 1916, releasing smoke and causing the ground to subside and crack. Residents live with toxic fumes and the risk of collapse; a long-running relocation plan has moved only part of the population.
