Decades of oil spills have coated mangroves and creeks in crude, poisoning fishing communities.
The Niger Delta has suffered thousands of oil spills since the 1950s from ageing pipelines, sabotage and theft. A 2011 UN assessment of Ogoniland found groundwater contaminated with benzene far above safe levels and estimated clean-up would take 25 to 30 years. Mangrove replanting and a formal remediation programme are under way.
