Kraków coal smog
Kraków, Poland · 50.06°, 19.94° · Air pollution
Poland's historic capital choked on smoke from household coal stoves until it became the first Polish city to ban them.
Most of the EU's most polluted towns are in Poland, where coal heats millions of homes. Kraków, in a river basin that traps smog, suffered some of the worst winters. After years of campaigning, the city banned solid-fuel heating in 2019 and subsidised replacing old 'smoky' boilers; air quality has improved, though smoke drifts in from surrounding villages.
