Athabasca oil sands
Alberta, Canada · 57.00°, -111.50° · Fossil fuels
Boreal forest stripped for open-pit bitumen mines and vast toxic tailings ponds visible from space.
The Athabasca oil sands are one of the largest petroleum deposits on Earth. Extracting bitumen from the sand means clearing boreal forest and wetlands, and leaves tailings ponds covering well over 200 km² that contain naphthenic acids and heavy metals. The industry is Canada's fastest-growing source of greenhouse gas emissions.
