Cerro de Pasco
Pasco, Peru · -10.68°, -76.26° · Mining damage
An open-pit mine has swallowed the centre of a city 4,300 m up in the Andes, leaving children with high lead levels.
Cerro de Pasco grew around silver and then zinc and lead mining; the open pit now sits in the middle of town, over a kilometre wide and hundreds of metres deep. Decades of dust and tailings have contaminated soil and water, and health studies have found elevated lead and other metals in local children. Plans to relocate the city have been discussed for years without resolution.
In the game
Cerro de Pasco flares up as Land destroyed. The fix is a gesture: slash through the bulldozers to stop the clearing. Done right, it becomes Damage stopped 🌱.
