Rondônia arc of deforestation

Rondônia, Brazil · -10.20°, -62.90° · Deforestation

Fishbone clearing patterns along roads have removed large parts of this Amazon state's rainforest for cattle and farms.

Rondônia is one of the most deforested states in the Brazilian Amazon. From the 1970s, settlement roads cut into the forest and farmers cleared strips on either side, producing the distinctive 'fishbone' pattern visible from space. Cattle ranching and soy have driven most of the loss. Reforestation and protected indigenous territories are the main levers that have slowed it.
