Caquetá deforestation front
San Vicente del Caguán, Colombia · 1.60°, -74.40° · Deforestation
After the 2016 peace deal, forest clearing surged in former guerrilla territory as cattle and land speculation moved in.
For decades, FARC control kept settlers out of much of Colombia's Amazon. After the 2016 peace agreement, deforestation in Caquetá, Guaviare and Meta jumped as ranchers, land grabbers and coca growers moved into the vacuum, including along the edges of Chiribiquete National Park. Colombia's deforestation has since fluctuated sharply with policy and enforcement.
