Dead Sea
Jordan / Israel / West Bank · 31.50°, 35.50° · Drying lake
The water level drops about a metre a year as the Jordan River is diverted, opening thousands of sinkholes.
Almost all of the Jordan River's flow is now used upstream, and mineral evaporation ponds take more, so the Dead Sea's surface falls roughly a metre each year. As it retreats, fresh groundwater dissolves buried salt and the ground collapses into sinkholes along the shore. A planned Red Sea–Dead Sea canal has stalled.
