Nile Delta coast

Rosetta, Egypt · 31.40°, 30.40° · Wetland loss

Starved of sediment by the Aswan Dam, the delta is eroding and sinking while plastic from the Nile reaches the Mediterranean.

The Nile Delta holds most of Egypt's farmland and much of its population on land barely above sea level. Since the Aswan High Dam was completed in 1970, the silt that once rebuilt the coast has been trapped upstream, and the shoreline at Rosetta has retreated by kilometres. Rising seas and salt intrusion threaten the fields, and the Nile is among the main rivers carrying plastic into the Mediterranean.
