Rivers that once fed the Great Salt Lake are diverted for alfalfa, cities and industry, and a two-decade drought cut inflows further. The lake has lost most of its volume, threatening the brine shrimp that feed millions of migratory birds and exposing hundreds of square kilometres of dust-prone sediment upwind of Salt Lake City. Utah has begun buying water rights and changing farm rules to send more water to the lake.
