The lake has lost around 90% of its surface since the 1960s, undermining 30 million people's livelihoods.
Lake Chad shrank dramatically from the 1960s to the 1990s because of drought and irrigation withdrawals, and its size now swings widely with the rains. Fishing, farming and herding communities around it have been hit by scarcity, which has fed instability in the region. Proposals range from better water management to a controversial inter-basin transfer from the Congo.
