Sierra Nevada megafires
Plumas County, California, USA · 40.00°, -121.00° · Wildfires
Hotter, drier summers and a century of fire suppression have produced record-breaking forest fires.
California's largest wildfires on record have all occurred since 2018. Dense forests built up by decades of suppressing natural fire, combined with longer droughts and heat, burn far more intensely than they used to. Prescribed burning, forest thinning and restoring natural fire regimes are the main management responses.
