Cerrado savanna conversion
Western Bahia, Brazil · -12.50°, -45.80° · Deforestation
The world's most biodiverse savanna is being converted to giant circular irrigated soy and cotton fields.
The Cerrado covers about a fifth of Brazil and holds around 5% of the planet's species. It has far weaker legal protection than the Amazon, and roughly half of it has been converted to agriculture. Its deep-rooted plants are called an 'upside-down forest' because most of the biomass is underground, where it stores carbon and feeds the headwaters of major rivers.
In the game
Cerrado savanna conversion flares up as Land destroyed. The fix is a gesture: slash through the bulldozers to stop the clearing. Done right, it becomes Damage stopped 🌱. Finish all three steps of its chain in one round for a combo, or take your time in Explore mode: a place you fully restore stays green on your map for good.
