Guanabara Bay

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil · -22.80°, -43.17° · River pollution

The bay beneath Sugarloaf receives much of Rio's sewage; promises to clean it for the 2016 Olympics were not met.

Guanabara Bay is one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world and one of the most polluted. Only part of the wastewater from the surrounding cities is treated, rivers bring garbage that collects in floating mats, and a refinery and port add oil and heavy metals. Olympic sailors in 2016 competed amid debris. Mangroves at the bay's edges have shrunk, and the Guiana dolphin population has dropped sharply.
