Pantanal wetland fires

Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil · -17.60°, -57.00° · Wildfires

Around a quarter of the world's largest tropical wetland burned in 2020 during a historic drought.

The Pantanal floods every year and is home to the densest jaguar population on Earth, plus giant otters, hyacinth macaws and caimans. In 2020, the worst drought in decades combined with fires set to clear pasture, and roughly a quarter to a third of the biome burned. Record fires struck again in 2024. Changes to upstream flows and climate are making the wetland drier.
