Mediterranean plastic

Ligurian Sea, Italy · 43.60°, 8.50° · Ocean plastic

A nearly enclosed sea with some of the highest microplastic concentrations recorded.

The Mediterranean exchanges water with the Atlantic only through the narrow Strait of Gibraltar, so plastic that enters tends to stay. Hundreds of millions of coastal residents and tourists, plus rivers like the Nile and Po, feed a flow of waste estimated in the hundreds of thousands of tonnes a year. Beach clean-ups and single-use plastic bans are the common responses.
