Chao Phraya River

Bangkok, Thailand · 13.70°, 100.50° · Ocean plastic

Bangkok's river funnels the capital's plastic and sewage into the Gulf of Thailand.

Thailand has ranked among the world's larger contributors of plastic to the ocean, and much of it travels down the Chao Phraya through Bangkok. The river also receives untreated wastewater from a metropolis of over ten million. A ban on single-use plastic bags at major retailers took effect in 2020, and trash-trap booms have been installed on canals feeding the river.
