Great Pacific Garbage Patch
North Pacific Ocean · 32.00°, -145.00° · Ocean plastic
A gyre of floating plastic estimated at over 1.6 million km², most of it fishing gear and fragments.
Ocean currents in the North Pacific gyre gather floating debris into a diffuse patch roughly three times the size of France. It is not a visible island but a soup of microplastics and larger items, with abandoned fishing gear making up a large share of the mass. Stopping plastic at river mouths is far cheaper than cleaning it at sea.
