India's 'energy capital' packs coal mines, power plants and fly-ash ponds into one district, with mercury in the water and dust in the air.
Singrauli supplies a large share of India's coal-fired electricity from a cluster of plants around a reservoir, fed by vast open-cast mines. Fly-ash ponds have breached and flooded villages, mercury and heavy metals have been found in water and food, and the area was officially classed as 'critically polluted'. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced by the mines and reservoir over the decades.
