Sundarbans mangroves
Khulna, Bangladesh · 22.00°, 89.30° · Wetland loss
The world's largest mangrove forest faces rising seas, shrimp farming and oil-tanker traffic.
The Sundarbans straddle the Ganges delta across Bangladesh and India and shelter the Bengal tiger. Mangroves buffer cyclones and store carbon, but conversion to shrimp ponds, upstream dams reducing freshwater, salinity rise and sea level rise all threaten them. A 2014 oil spill highlighted the risk from shipping lanes through the forest.
