Kathmandu sits in a valley ringed by hills that trap emissions from hundreds of brick kilns, construction dust, diesel vehicles and household fuel burning. In spring, smoke from forest fires across Nepal adds to it, and the Himalayan views vanish for weeks. Converting kilns to cleaner designs and electrifying transport are the main efforts under way.
