Central Chile has been in a megadrought for over a decade. In February 2024, fires driven by heat and wind swept from pine and eucalyptus plantations into densely built hillside settlements around Viña del Mar and Quilpué, killing over 130 people and destroying thousands of homes. Investigators later charged a firefighter and a forestry official with starting the blaze.
