Riau's peat swamps have been drained for pulpwood and oil palm, turning waterlogged carbon into tinder. Fires set to clear land smoulder underground for weeks, releasing enormous amounts of CO2 and a toxic haze that has closed schools and airports in Singapore and Malaysia. Rewetting peatland is the key fix.
