Chiquitano dry forest fires
Santa Cruz, Bolivia · -17.00°, -60.50° · Wildfires
The world's largest tropical dry forest burned across millions of hectares in 2019 after land-clearing burns got out of control.
The Chiquitano forest of eastern Bolivia is a transition between the Amazon and the Chaco. In 2019, fires set to clear land for farming and cattle, encouraged by decrees allowing controlled burns, spread through drought-stricken forest and burned several million hectares. Large fires returned in 2020 and 2024. Jaguars, giant anteaters and indigenous Chiquitano communities depend on the forest.
