Canada's 2023 fire season burned a record area and sent smoke that turned New York's sky orange.
In 2023 wildfires burned around 18 million hectares across Canada, more than double the previous record, from British Columbia to Quebec and the Atlantic provinces. Smoke drifted over the eastern United States, giving New York the worst air quality of any major city for a day. Warmer, drier springs and insect-killed forests are lengthening the boreal fire season.
