Bishkek winter smoke

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan · 42.87°, 74.59° · Air pollution

Coal burned in homes and an ageing power plant make winter air in the Kyrgyz capital among the worst in the world.

Bishkek lies at the foot of the Tian Shan, and in winter cold air pools over the city while tens of thousands of households heat with cheap coal and the Soviet-era combined heat and power plant burns more. On bad days PM2.5 levels rival the worst cities anywhere. Gas connections and better insulation are slowly spreading through the outer districts.
