Cancer Alley

St. James Parish, Louisiana, USA · 30.05°, -90.90° · Air pollution

A 140 km stretch of the Mississippi lined with some 150 petrochemical plants, where mostly Black communities face elevated cancer risk.

Between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, refineries and chemical plants stand among small historic towns founded by freed slaves. US EPA modelling has estimated cancer risk from air toxics in parts of the corridor at many times the national average, and residents have fought new plants for years. The area has become a national reference point for environmental justice.
