Canals and farms drained half of the 'river of grass'; a decades-long restoration is rebuilding its flow.

The Everglades once flowed slowly from Lake Okeechobee to Florida Bay across a vast shallow wetland. Drainage for farming and cities cut it roughly in half and polluted it with phosphorus from sugar fields. The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, approved in 2000, is one of the largest ecosystem restorations ever attempted.
