Brazil's biggest soy and cattle state sits where the Amazon meets the Cerrado, and the forest has given way to a grid of fields.
Mato Grosso produces more soy and beef than any other Brazilian state. Since the 1980s the BR-163 highway corridor has turned rainforest and savanna into vast farms visible from orbit. The 2006 Soy Moratorium sharply reduced direct conversion of Amazon forest to soy, but cattle ranching remains the main driver of clearing, and the Cerrado half of the state has far weaker protection.
