One of Africa's largest open dumps, declared full in 2001 and still receiving Nairobi's waste, smoulders beside homes and schools.
Dandora takes most of Nairobi's garbage onto a site of roughly 30 acres that was officially full more than two decades ago. Waste is burned in the open, and thousands of people pick through it for recyclables. A UN study found high lead levels in children living nearby and widespread respiratory problems. Plans to relocate the dump and build a waste-to-energy plant have stalled repeatedly.
