Bantar Gebang landfill
Bekasi, Indonesia ยท -6.34ยฐ, 106.99ยฐ ยท E-waste
Jakarta's rubbish mountain, one of the largest landfills in the world, receives around 7,000 tonnes of waste a day.
Bantar Gebang takes nearly all of Jakarta's household waste. Its heaps rise tens of metres, leak methane and leachate, and are worked by thousands of informal pickers who live on and around them. The site is close to capacity; waste-to-energy plants and a push for recycling and sorting are meant to extend its life while a successor is found.
In the game
