Lake Victoria
Kisumu, Kenya · -0.10°, 34.60° · River pollution
Sewage and farm runoff fuel water hyacinth mats and algae on Africa's largest lake.
Lake Victoria supports tens of millions of people across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Nutrient pollution from cities and farms has driven invasive water hyacinth, which chokes harbours and fish breeding grounds, and recurring algal blooms. The introduced Nile perch also wiped out hundreds of native cichlid species.
