Guiyu e-waste town
Guangdong, China Β· 23.30Β°, 116.35Β° Β· E-waste
Once the world's largest electronic-waste dismantling site, where acid baths and open burning left children with high lead levels.
For two decades, shipping containers of discarded computers and phones from around the world arrived in Guiyu, where family workshops stripped them with acid and fire to recover metals. Studies found some of the highest dioxin levels recorded and elevated blood lead in most local children. China banned e-waste imports and moved the trade into a regulated industrial park in 2015, cleaning up much of the town.
