Madagascar's eastern rainforest
Atsinanana, Madagascar · -18.90°, 48.40° · Deforestation
Slash-and-burn farming has cleared most of the island's original forest, home to lemurs found nowhere else.
Around 90% of Madagascar's species are endemic, yet the island has lost the majority of its original forest cover. Tavy (slash-and-burn) agriculture, charcoal and illegal rosewood logging are the main drivers. Red soil washing into rivers after clearing gives the island its 'bleeding' appearance in satellite images.
In the game
Madagascar's eastern rainforest flares up as Land destroyed. The fix is a gesture: slash through the bulldozers to stop the clearing. Done right, it becomes Damage stopped 🌱. Finish all three steps of its chain in one round for a combo, or take your time in Explore mode: a place you fully restore stays green on your map for good.
