Agbogbloshie scrapyard
Accra, Ghana · 5.55°, -0.23° · E-waste
Discarded electronics from richer countries were burned here to recover copper, poisoning air and soil.
Agbogbloshie became a symbol of the global e-waste trade: workers, many of them children, burned cables and circuit boards to extract metals, releasing lead, dioxins and other toxins. Soil lead levels were found far above safe limits. The site was cleared by authorities in 2021, but informal recycling continues elsewhere in the city.
