Tonlé Sap lake
Siem Reap, Cambodia · 12.90°, 104.10° · Wetland loss
Southeast Asia's largest lake swells and shrinks with the Mekong each year, but dams and drought are weakening the pulse that feeds its fishery.
Tonlé Sap expands several times over in the wet season when the Mekong pushes water back up its outlet river, and that flood pulse supports one of the world's richest inland fisheries, feeding millions of Cambodians. Upstream hydropower dams, sand mining and recent droughts have delayed and shrunk the flood, fish catches have fallen, and the flooded forest around the lake has been cleared and burned.
