Sahel desertification
Zinder, Niger · 13.80°, 8.99° · Deforestation
Overgrazing, firewood cutting and drought are turning farmland to sand along the Sahara's edge.
The Sahel is the semi-arid band south of the Sahara. Population growth, firewood demand and erratic rains have degraded soils across the region. Farmer-managed natural regeneration, where farmers protect tree shoots in their fields, has re-greened millions of hectares in Niger, and the Great Green Wall initiative aims to restore land across the continent.
In the game
Sahel desertification flares up as Land destroyed. The fix is a gesture: slash through the bulldozers to stop the clearing. Done right, it becomes Damage stopped 🌱. Finish all three steps of its chain in one round for a combo, or take your time in Explore mode: a place you fully restore stays green on your map for good.
