Mithi River

A once-seasonal stream turned into an open sewer, narrowed by construction, that flooded Mumbai catastrophically in 2005.
The Mithi drains from the Vihar and Powai lakes to Mahim Creek, passing the airport and the Bandra Kurla business district. Slums and industry along its banks discharge sewage and chemicals, and encroachment has narrowed it so much that the 2005 deluge, when nearly a metre of rain fell in a day, backed up and submerged much of the city. Widening and clean-up projects have been under way since.
