Pedrógão Grande fire country

Leiria, Portugal · 39.92°, -8.14° · Wildfires

A 2017 wildfire killed 66 people on a single road, in a landscape of eucalyptus plantations and abandoned farms.

Portugal burns a larger share of its land each year than any other European country. The June 2017 Pedrógão Grande fire trapped people fleeing by car and became the deadliest in the nation's history. Dense, fast-burning eucalyptus and pine plantations, depopulated villages and unmanaged scrub all fed it. Reforms since have tightened plantation rules and fuel management.
