Doñana wetlands

Huelva, Spain · 37.00°, -6.40° · Wetland loss

Europe's most important wetland for migratory birds is drying as strawberry farms pump its aquifer, many of them from illegal wells.

Doñana National Park shelters millions of migrating birds and the Iberian lynx on the Guadalquivir delta. Around it, greenhouses growing strawberries and other berries for export draw heavily on the shared aquifer, and thousands of wells are unlicensed. Its lagoons have dried in recent summers, and the EU Court of Justice ruled in 2021 that Spain had failed to protect it.
