Tehran smog
Tehran, Iran · 35.69°, 51.39° · Air pollution
A city of nine million pressed against the Alborz mountains, where winter inversions trap exhaust and close schools for days.
Tehran's air is dominated by millions of vehicles, many old, burning fuel that has at times been poor quality, plus power plants and industry on the city's edge. Cold still winters cap the pollution under an inversion layer, and authorities routinely close schools and restrict traffic. Studies have attributed thousands of premature deaths a year in the city to air pollution.
