Cocoa belt deforestation
Soubré, Côte d'Ivoire · 5.80°, -6.60° · Deforestation
The world's top cocoa producer has lost most of its forest, much of it to cocoa farms inside protected areas.
Côte d'Ivoire grows around 40% of the world's cocoa, and its forest cover has fallen by roughly 80% since 1960. Investigations found cocoa grown illegally inside national parks and classified forests, with the beans entering major chocolate supply chains. Chimpanzee and elephant populations collapsed with the forest. The 2017 Cocoa and Forests Initiative commits companies and governments to end cocoa-driven deforestation.
